After much research (read: a couple minutes on Wikipedia), I found out that the desks were empty because Meighen was an asshole of the highest order. Seriously, nobody liked him. Quebec hated him because of Conscription, labour hated him because of his refusal to implement regulations and farmers hated him because of tariffs.

In Canada, it’s quite a feat to be hated by French-Canadians and rednecks. And for that, Mr. Meighen, I salute you. With at least one finger.
